BUSINESS NOT AS USUAL, ROBA TELLS CONTRACTORS

                        No short cut. County officials measuring the width of a road, to ensure it was to the specifications.

Mandera Governor Ali Ibrahim Roba on Wednesday put on notice contractors undertaking shoddy work, after securing contractors to implement development projects with his administration.

Speaking during a three days an inspection tour of roads under construction in his County the governor said contractors who failed to do their construction work as specified in the project plan will not be paid and forced to repeat as many times, until the County engineers’ were satisfied with the completion of the works.

Roba who led the county monitoring and evaluation committee and some members of his cabinet on a three days roads inspection tour of the recently completed 577KM all weather-access murram roads comprise of 15 roads that link the six sub-counties said his administration will blacklisted any company that was found to be compromising the standard of public projects.

Consequently, the Governor has ordered 5 out of the 15 contractors undertaking the road project to immediately repeat some parts of the work in order to meet the required standards and specifications.
He said “I’m really impressed by the work of most contractors and equally disappointed at few others. My government will leaving no room for shoddy work and I want the five constructors to repeat their and rectify the identified shortcomings’,

He promised to carry out another inspection after the repeat work has been completed to ascertain, when the job was done as required.

He added “Those contractors who think that they can do shoddy work and get away with it , should know that those days are long gone and my government expects nothing less of perfect work done for the people”,
Governor Roba said contractors who will not adhere to the specifications in the Bills of Quantities (BQs), when implement projects will not be paid –and above all risk losing business with the county government.

He said the residents of the Mandera County has suffered enough, where projects meant for the public good ended in enriching unscrupulous individuals who cared less about the common man and now that the power is their hands they are not ready to listen to old cock and bull stories.

“During the old days, when projects implementation, monitoring and evaluation were overseen by inspectors who flew from the Nairobi, local people never had any say in their projects, which has led to many white elephants dotting everywhere in the County. This can’t continue under my watch’ He has warned.

He added “If you have taken the tax payers money to implement any projects, then there is no two ways, you must deliver according to the expectation of the County specification/standards and to the beneficiaries interests. Anyone who want short cut and quick riches from public money should better look for elsewhere”,

The Mandera County chief stated that contractors who will do shoddy construction work and will not finish the projects at the specified time will not be tolerated and as they would not be paid a cent.

He said the contractors must strictly stick to the official architectural and engineers’ drawings plan as indicated in the contractual paper by the County engineers and come-up with a standard work that will serve its intend purposes to the beneficiary communities.
