BULALA: GIVE US 10 DAYS, TO END YOUR THIRSTY

                                      The workaholic Minister for water in Gsa County Hon. Bulale taking questions from journalists at his office, which Gsa residents are thirsty


Garissa County government will spend Ksh. 150 millionS to end perennial water shortage that has made life unbearable for the resident of Garissa town for the last 2 months.

Addressing press in his office in Garissa, the executive committee member in charge of water and sanitation services Muktar Bulale said water problem in the expensive town, which is a gateway to the northeastern region, will be a thing of the past in the next ten days.

The town remained remained starved of precious commodity (water) for the last two months, which has forced the residents to depend on a raw and untreated water from River-Tana which passes with voluminous gallons of water arm stretch from the town.

Bulale said the running of household taps, which remained dry for days on ends will fully resume in the next ten (10) days.

He urged the residents to persevere in the next few days as the perennial water problem is being tackled adequately once and for all.

He said "Sh150 million has already been set aside to undertake major works to restore normalcy in water provision in Garissa town. I have established a task force comprising of my office, Chief Officers and Directors to come-up with recommendations that will result in a permanent end to water scarcity in the town",

The County executive  said the County administration is currently undertaking major technical services –replacing water pipes that were blocked during heavy rains that led to the over-flow of River Tana.

Hotels and residential home outskirt of Garissa town namely Bula Hodhan, Hagar, Bula Adaan, Bula Game and Bula Gestow were hardest hit by the water scarcity forcing families to depend on raw and untreated water supplied to them at exorbitant prices by commercial vendors taking advantage of the crisis.

"I urge the residents to bear with us in next ten (10) days as we solve the acute water problem which has been experienced for the last many days ones and for all," He pleaded with residents.

He said the county government has heavily invested in provision of safe and clean water to its residents and had so far bought 16 water pumps at a cost of sh.29miliion and will also refurbish and replace the leaking water tanks that have made water flow erratic in the town through wastage.

Bulale said water reservoirs located outskirt the town was meant to hold water for limited capacity and with the demands of the commodity increasing due to growing of number of town dwellers on daily basis.

During the press briefing over the water crisis the executive member was flanked by CEC members Salah Yakub Farah (Environment and Energy), Hajir Mohamed Dahiye (Urban Services), Idriss Aden Muktar (Trade and Special Programs), Chief Officer Mohamed Abdi Ali (Water) and the Managing Director of Garissa Water and Sewerage Company (GAWASCO) a Mr Idriss Omar.

Garissa Water and Sewerage Company (GAWASCO) Managing Director Idriss Omar said the company is renovating four unused intake wells in Ziwani which he noted that after refurbishment them, water problem in the town will be a thing in the past.

The four unused intake tanks build by Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) in October 2009 for Garissa urban water supply, has remained used since then.

GAWASCO manager dispel fears that some staff were sabotaging the provision of water to some residents adding that company employees are committed to perform their duties diligently and without any discrimination.

"We are here to ensure the locals get enough clean water irrespective of who they are. If any staff were found of doing to the contrary should be reported to us to take stern disciplinary action," he said.
