Fierce gun fight between security officers and suspected
militia has broken out in Mandera town today (Wednesday) morning eyewitness report
has indicated.
Three people identified as civilians by the residents are claimed to being
killed in the shooting that ensued after a powerful blast. However, the reported death can't be
independently confirmed since we are yet to get responses from the government
officials.
The blast is reported to have occurred shortly after a
security vehicle passed the Rhamu stage on Mandera-Rhamu road. The area is epicenter of most explosive
attacks occurring in the border town lying footsteps from the cursed and war-torn Somalia.
Our correspondent Marshley Maryalan, in Mandera reported that
the shot out was proceed by a deafening blast that shocked building and sent
panic among the residents of the border town marred by repeated attempts of
explosive attacks usually carried by unknown but daring criminals gangs.
By the time of going to the press, the gun shot was still
raging on around the congested Metameta suburb.
An eyewitness who declined to be named for fear of his life and who called the Frontier
leaks alert desk at around 7.20 am a tea time in most part of North-Eastern region of Kenya, said “The situation is desperate we are caught in our houses and panic
stricken suburb dwellers has scampered for their safety. The situation is
really bad”,
Mandera County has suffered numerous explosive based attacks
that are aimed to destabilize the County by unknown criminals. The Governor, his officials and
the County facilities have been the main targets of the explosive planters. In a previous similar attacks targeted the county offices, vehicles and revenue office.
The result oriented Mandera Governor Ali Ibrahim Roba escaped
two attempts on his life last month (October), after his motorcade miraculously escaped two powerful explosives, that bomb experts has since said could bring down
15 storey building in seconds, it hits its target, were discretely laid buried
on his way to his County offices.
