MAN ARRESTED WITH AL-SHABAAB DONKEYS IN HULLUGHO

A man suspected to be a member of Al-Shabaab was arrested in Hullugho town in Garissa county in North Eastern province shortly after delivering ten donkeys to people believed to be the dreaded Islamist group.

The 30 year old man from Bura-East in Fafi district was arrested by police after tip off from the members of the public who was suspicious with the man who was driving a group of donkey.

Another man suspected to be accomplice escape arrest by police officers.

Confirming the incidents Hullugho district Commissioner Benedict Nduva said the man was arrested after residents reported that he delivered ten donkeys to another man who was waiting him in Hulugho town who later drove the donkeys across the border into Somalia.

The DC said the donkeys were given to the suspect by a businessman in Bangale division of Tana River district to deliver them to the third person in the border after been paid shillings 6000 for delivering the animals.

The administrator said they are investigating whether the man has links to the terror linked al-Shabaab militia group.

A senior police officer who sought anonymity said the suspect also had a buibui( a female clothing) which he said may have been used to dupe police officers at road checks and avoid causing suspicion.

Prices of the previously neglected donkeys have shot up since the country military invaded Somalia to rout out the terror linked Al-Shabaab which was accused for carrying spates of grenade attacks and kidnapping inside the country.

Donkeys is currently selling at Ksh 20,000 up from Ksh 6,000.A security official  in Sangailu divisional headquarters who never wanted to be quote who spoke to the Nation on phone said the suspect   who is a Kenyan from coast province claimed to have taken donkeys to  the Holugho border town an issue that coincides with alert from Kenyan officials that Alshabab  were buying donkey at high price  in Somalia to sneak in explosives into the country following heightened security check up where  explosive detectors were used.

The Kenyan military had earlier this month against selling donkeys in large numbers saying that al-Shabaab were using it to transport food and weapons following heavy rains in southern Somalia making roads impassable.
